RECOMMENDATORY LETTERS.
The Hebrew Congregation, Benai Jeshurun, of Newark, State of
New Jersey, intends to erect a house of worship to the God
of Israel. Although small in number, and having no
wealthy members in their midst, they have contributed over
$1,200, bought a suitable lot, and defrayed all the expenses
necessary at the start of a Congregation. But they are unable, if not
assisted by their brethren and friends, to provide the means necessary for the
erection of a Synagogue. They would willingly delay the erection of a house of
worship, and be fully satisfied with the room they have fitted up, and
in which service at present is held, if, on the last Holidays, the truth
had not been manifested, that the number of
worshippers was so large, that it has become impossible that they can
be accommodated in that room. They therefore earnestly solicit their friends to
assist them in their praiseworthy undertaking, and entertain not the least
doubt, that by the liberality and charity of their brethren, they will
soon be enabled to begin the erection of a house, in which the name of the
Holy One of Israel will be praised and worshipped.
RABBI DR. LILIENTHAL.
NEW YORK, NOVEMBER 1, 5615.
Although I am at all times opposed to recommendatory letters,
yet in the present instance I most cheerfully comply with the request of the
Trustees of the contemplated Synagogue at Newark, to
endorse the claim they have on the sympathy and aid of those more affluent than
themselves, and to solicit subscriptions for their laudable undertaking.
REV. S. M. ISAACS,
NEW YORK, NOVEMBER 17, 5615.
659 Houston street.
It is with much pleasure that I recommend the Hebrew Congregation of
Newark to the kindness of the Jewish com-munity.
Few in number, and with very limited means, they undertook to form a
congregation, and their increasing numbers now require that they should
erect suitable places of worship, and I feel confident that any donation
bestowed on our brothers in Newark, will be applied
in such a manner that the donors will be gratified at it.
