My dear sir.
I am very much obliged to you for your kindness in sending me a copy of your translation of Mendelssohn's Trea-tise. Being about to leave town for a few days I cannot wait until I have recd it, to thank you, but I have recd the autobiographical notices in the "Introduction" its great interest. If your industry shall not be rever-de as it deserves it to be, it cannot

fail, at least, to be admired, & to re-ceive the esteem even of those who differ most widely from you as to the object to be attained.
It is one of the mysteries of the Divine Providence at which I would most submissively bow my feeble un-derstanding, that the human mind, with equal sincerity of heart to know the truth from the Scriptures, is so diverse in its conclusions. But I would be grateful at the same time that the human heart is to

constitute that such sincere inqui-rers, however diverse, may entertain a cordial charity & regard towards one another. It is not for the first time that I now include you in my prayers for myself and all who love the revealed truth & wish to under-stand & follow it, that we may be all guided by the same unerring spirit that directed the sacred wri-ters.
