Bretheren,
In behalf of the Congrega-tion Beth Elohim of this city, we earnestly appeal to you to permit your Hazan the Revd Isaac Leeser to come on to Charleston, for the purpose of giving Testimony in a case about to be tried, which involves questions not only of the greatest importance to us, but of deep interest to the whole House of Israel. A party in our Congregation have undertaken to sap the foundations of our sacred Institutions, and to introduce innovations, which must lead to the eventual overthrow of the Jewish Ritual as established for age past. With this party unfortunately has united our late Hazan the Revd. G. Poznanski, and we are led to believe that he will be brought forward as a witness to maintain these innovations and to endeavor to prove them consistent with the Institutions of our People. It will need therefore the learning and character of some of our best-informed teachers to expose the errors and inconsistencies of such innovations, and we know no one whose learning and reputation could be more certainly relied upon, than the Revd Hazan whom it is your good fortune to have. We are struggling to maintain the Institutions and Faith of our common ancestors against an array of influence, which but for our Trust in that Great Being who will always support the right might deter us from our duty. But we are determined to stand up to the last, and not permit Rationalism or Infidelity to invade our Sanctuary. Fully confident that your sympathies are with us, and that you will regard us but as the outposts in fighting the Common Battle of the Struse? of Israel, and cannot doubt, that you will consent to spare us your Hazan for a short time.
The case in which we need the Testimony of your Hazan is in such a form that our Lawyers advise us, will need his personal presence, as no Testimony can be taken in writing. The trial is expected to take place on the 8th of August and we only ask therefore, that you dispense with Mr. Leeser for the space of a Fortnight, after which time we hope he will return to you improved in health as our City is perfectly healthy.
