Dear Sir
A question has been left to you to decide and I would like to have the favor of an early reply where was Sir Moses Montefiore born I know that the article in Harpers last November and which has been extensively circulated says Leghorn[.] I maintain he was born in England and am confirmed by Condensed Am Encyclopaedia Appleton 1877. The Students Encya Estes and Lauriat[?] 1883 The American Encyclopaedia Appleton 1881 vol XI p. 479 Besides this see the memorial of Sir Moses addressed to Prince Charles of Roumania dated August 27. 1867 (to be found in the London Times 21. Septr 1867 page 9.) the following language is used . "England my native country"
