Dear Mr Morais
From the above address you will note that 11 Bevis Marks is a direction of the past, as I was obliged a few months, after the demises of my lamented Husband, to vacate the official residence, in favor of his successor, and sought a residence [?] near our Branch Synagogue. Your ni[?] heart will readily believe I did not leave the house of my married life, with all tis associations, without a severe pang and the dear [?] Syangogue, in which for so many years, I had prayed, prayed
with so many loved ones, but such are the sad changes, that we must all submit to, I am here surrounded by all my old Friends who kindly endeavor to win me from myself—but altho 2 years and four months have elapsed since my loss the wound is not healed but I endeavor to follow in his footsteps by as far as is my power to do my duty and have resumed my attendance at our schools, to which as of old I am much attached. We hold a distribution of pr[?] on the 13th June, being the first since the demise of our much lamented Haham a memorial ode has been written for the occasion by our talented coreligionist Mr Henry for the occasion, and as I think you still feel an interest in the old
congregation, enclose you a copy I have written thus much without referring to the cause which has drawn this forth, but be assured I do not the less value your very kind thought, and fully appreciate the very pleasing remembrance you must entertain towards your first English riends by making me the recipient of one of your son's early production the compilation of which, reflects much credit, on the writer, of the various Biographies of Our eminent men and women. I have already perused the greater part of the work altho for the reason above named I only received the book on the 26th Inst assure your son of the deep interest I feel for his future success as a Jewish writer but added to that also also I must add
that as your son my interest is greater most sincerely do I wish him, and your other children every success in life and may you dear sir be spared to witness the fulfillment of your hearts desire towards them the fine blessing denied me my [?] Husband would have echoed my sentiments. Should any of your children ever visit the old country whilst I am living I am now an old (woman) I hope they would not fail to seek me. I need not assure you, that my news, your old pupils, have felt pleasure in perusing your son's work and beg me to assure you of their respectful regard and good wishes. All in life passes as in a dream.

MEMORIAL ODE.

Our Chief is dead—sound long the funeral hymn,
The Years in passing bring their own relief,
Yet never shall his memory grow more dim,
And time shall soften—not efface—our grief.
As on that day when fast the tidings spread
With saddened hearts we mourn—our Chief is dead.
Life's cares and pleasures lay aside awhile,
And think of him whose name we all revere;
A thousand hopes and fears the hours beguile,
And leave us scarce the time to drop a tear,
But on this spot where once he loved to tread,
Oh let us pause and think—our Chief is dead.
Dead! in his zenith of his life and fame,
Before one power was turning to decay,
Veiled, unexpected the Destroyer came,
And only left for earth the lifeless clay;
But from our hearts his image ne'er has fled,
It lives—then wherefore do we say he's dead?
Our Chief doth live—his virtues shall not die,
His teachings and his influence still are felt,
Here—where he drew our every thought on high,
Now—while our hearts with sweet remembrance melt,
The Gates of Hope their consolation give,
Here he could never die—our Chief doth live.
