Respected Sir.
Your postal and contents to hand and in reply I would say That some time ago I wrote a letter to the secre-tary of the United Hebrew Benevolent society of Philadel-phia upon a matter which I shall herein relate and received no reply. I was advised by Mr. A. Marcus of this city to address you in the matter and do so with the hope that any trouble it will occasion, will be considered by you as for the good of Judaism.
About two years ago, the wife of Samuel Harris was on her
voyage from London to New York and died on the passage she had with her 4 children. On their arrival the fathre took charge of the children and placed 2 in the Orphan Asylum in New York taking 2 with him in Philadelphia. Shortly after the affair occurred he got married and treated his family very badly at one time being arrested for the same. By his cruelty he drove his eldest daughter aged 14 from the house. Being driven from home his daughter Sarah was taken into the House of Industry, and from there taken by a Catholic family to West Philadelphia where she is to stay until she reaches the age of 21 years.
If she should remain with
the Christians for that length of time she would naturally lose all faith in our belief, having continually before her eyes the example of her Christian protectors.
I am by marriage the brother in law of Mrs Harris, besides the grandmother being here, we desire to obtain custody of the child so that we may bring her up as our own and so that she may not stray or be forced from the fold of Judaism. Though but a poor man and having a large family I would endeavor to give her all the comforts my own children possess and provide for her as for them as a father.
To this end I write to you, trusting that you will do all you can to comply with our wishes, were I pecuniarily able
I would go on to Philadelphia myself but my circumstances will not allow of it.
Hoping you will meet with success in procuring for me custody of the child I remain
