Dear Mr. Morais:--
I should have written you last week about a matter but could not find the time. Mr. M. Ellinger desires to write for us a series of articles enunciating the stand-point of reform on leading questions, such as the Restoration, the Resurrection, Sabbath, Dietary Laws etc. He wishes to do this, as he says, that the position of reform may be understood. Kohler he says, has done justice to neither his own side nor to conservatism, inasmuch as he has failed to reg recognize conservatism as it is regarded by its own leaders, but hase opposed an orthodoxy of the past, so to say. Mr. Ellinger is an able writer and we are certain that his articles would command attention. We would therefore like to put an antidote alongside of him, and are tempted to call upon you first, to see if your time and inclination will induce you to take up the pen again. Mr The plan is to publish in the "Amer. Hebrew" in the same issue articles on the same subject from a reform & orthodox standpoint, all articles to be briefly stated and not to occupy over two columns. This will insure their being read by all.
The articles are not to be of a contro-versial nature, but a statement of the po-sition of each party on the subject in question. When I suggested to Mr Ellinger the idea, he was pleased with it, but would like to have you take the other side. In this connection I may say, Mr. Morais, that the tone of your articles hase aroused a great deal of admiration for your position among persons of all degrees of (and none) of Judaism, and they have been pronounced as the best articles [overwritten: o]in the recent controversy. As one is generally assured of the approval of his own side of the house, I know it will be gratifying for you to know that Dr. Kohler was highly pleased with the tone of your articles, and he said that such contribute to the value of a discussion. Mr. Ellinger liked them so much that he wished you to write the companion series of his for simultaneous publication. Mr. Halmes-singer[?] expressed himself as deeply interested, and on Thursday night last I called on Mr. Julius Bien who, while he takes a deep interest in communal affairs, does not con-cern himself in religious affairs; yet. though he had only retd from Europe the week before, had read through the whole
of your series and admired your tone. "The man," he said in speaking of them "who frankly admits that he can not fully account for a certain state of things, strengthens his position ^ otherwise by doing so, more than he who, if he does not offer a palpably lame apology or argument, or squirm out of it in some way, avoids the matter entirely.
I could tell you of minor lights who feel the same way, but this will satisfy you you that your labors have not been in vain.
It is for this reason that we are the more anxious to have you take part in the proposed series. Mr. Ellinger, who in days gone by has done some rough newspaper fighting, intends writing his articles in your style. Of course time does not get a chance to hang heavily on your hands, so you must know best whether you can spare the time. They need not be consecutive, but can appear from time to time.
