Dear friend and colleague:-
Accept hearty thanks for your kind note! I am always so glad to see your dear handwriting. Retired as I live and having very slight intercourse with any of my colleagues, either here or elsewhere--the sole one whom I meet oftener is old, dear liebmann Adler, in this city--you can imagine that your words are welcome and refreshing to me.
And here permit me to say that I should be grateful for any criticism you would make on anything I publicly say or write. So, as to my [Hebrew] article, I am well aware that it might be complemented by drawing from and referring to sources to which I have no access. I should not wonder, f. i., that by many of the Jewish Italian authors of the 17. century the [Hebrew] and its introduction in the Synag. should have been mentioned or discussed. But can I know this? My library is a very small one and I have no other one in this city which I could make use of.
Permit me a question. I know that [Hebrew] is a part of the Sephardic ritual. But how is it with the psalms [Hebrew]? Are in the "Portuguese" Synagogues the six psalms 95 to 99 and 29 chanted before [Hebrew], and the ps. 92 x 93
after [Hebrew], as it is done according to [Hebrew]? I have not a Sephardic Siddur in my possession, so that I could know this. Further: Is in the Portuguese congregations [Hebrew] recited before or after [Hebrew] on Friday evenings? The sources at my command are self contradicting on this point.
I should think, my dear Mr. Morais, that you too might feel it sometimes keenly and painfully that you have no access to a large and comprehensive Hebrew library. But there is a fine nucleus of one in your city,--the Leeser library. You ought to take steps that this library be-comes systematically enlarged and that additional books are bought for it regularly every year. Is it not possible in Philada to interest a number of Jewish men in such an endeavor?
Now I must bring my causerie to an end. It would be wrong to tire you too much with my aim-less writings.
