Jewish Foster Home
AND
Orphan Asylum,
S. M. FLEISCHMAN, SUPT.
Germantown, Phila., December 13th 1888.
Rev. S. Morais.
My Dear Sir & Friend.
I am in receipt of your valued letter of the 10th inst. and wish to explain to you why under the circumstances it will be best not to send the boy. When the request was made by Mrs. Weiss it was in the form stated in my previous letter: "Mr Morais wishes to see Henry." Mr. Binswanger (who was present at the time) and I both agreed that Mr Morais' request could be complied with without asking a single question, since we are so well assured of Mr. Morais interest in the "Home" and its inmates and of his good judgment that both were safe in his
keeping; hence my note of inquiry when to send the boy. I surmized at the time that it was the mother's doings and am not sur-prized to find it so. This however being the case alters the matter entirely and I sincerely hope that after hearing the reasons you will coincide with me. The Jewish Foster Home is a family of which I am the father, responsible to our President and Board and through them to the supporters, moral and other-wise of the institution. Before applying for the position which I now have the honor to hold, I wrote to the President asking what would be expected of me as to the religious training and instruction of the children stating
at the same time that my views were liberal. In reply the President wrote to me that all that was demanded was that the children should be brought up as good Jewish children. With this understand-ing I applied for and accepted the position and in this sense I have tried to conscientously discharge my sacred duty keeping constantly in view that my position is a sacred trust imposed upon me by all the Jewish people of Phila. As long as the Pres. and Board are satisfied with my course Mrs Weiss must be, since we cannot establish the dangerous precedent of permitting any relative of the children to interfere with the management or
education of the inmates. We have nothing to conceal, whatever we do, or fail to do is open to public inspection, but we dare not for the peace and success of our family permit any relative to interfere. I enclose a postal card and would be very thankful to have you send me only a word that you agree with me, since I value your friendship and support both for myself and the "Home" so dearly that your endorsement of my action will be a source of encourage-ment to me. With kind regards Yours truly S. M. Flesichman - Identifier
