My dear Mr.Marcus
Many thanks for your congratulatory letter of the July 20. which reached me via St. Johns today burying Sergeant Israel at Camp Clay[.] I omitted all portions of the service which could be in any way distasteful to Jews[.] His burial in the United States will take place under his mother[']s supervision at Kalamazoo[.] He died or became unconcious in my arms—He was an honor to your race

Lieutenant Greeley in answer to a communication from Mr Alfred A. Marcus who expressed a wish that the body of Sergeant Edward[?] Israel might be interred according to Jewish rites, says: "To day (July 20) in burying Sergeant Israel, I omitted in the service all portions which could in any way be distasteful to Jews. The burial at Kalamazoo was under the su-pervision of his mother. The young man died unconscious in my arms. He was an honor to the race of which you are a member." - Identifier
