My dear Sir
I thank you very much for your kind lines, which reached me this morning.
The Rev Mr Montefiore of Paris not being able to speak English, and I not talking french, we could only make ourselves understood to each other in Hebrew. Of course I cannot freely converse in [Hebrew], but I heard Mr Montefiore say you were his [Hebrew]--hence I concluded he meant that you were his Hebrew Teacher.
I said one [Hebrew] in Hamburg, one in Paris, and 3 in Bryanstone St, in which latter Synagogue I assisted our mutual friend Mr Piperno on [Hebrew].
