Reverend and dear Sir:
Some two weeks ago, when last you favored me with a call, you informed me of the fact that there is being circulated an essay on religious subjects, alle-ged to have been written by me. Not having seen it myself, I cannot say whether or not such is the case, but assuming that it is the one which I wrote on that subject more than two years ago, I desire it to be distinctly understood that I never, either by direct approval or im-
plication, or in any other way authorized anybody to publish, or in any other way circulate, the said essay, and that it is only by committing an un-pardonable breach of confidence that it was possible to do it.
I therefore beg of you to protest in my name against the circulation of the essay in question, and to deny authoritatively that I entertain at this moment any of the sentiments expressed in it, any and all essays or assertions of others to the contrary notwithstanding.
Circumstances (of a private character, and well known to you) prevent me from person-ally denying it publicly at the present time, (though I shall surely do so as soon as able), and
therefore apply to you to do it for me, giving you full authority in the matter. I am, dear Sir, your obedient servant Gasr Loewenthal
