Dear Sir:
Dr. Isaiah Luzzato sent me five copies of the Pentateuch commented critically, and translated in pure Italian by his learned father [Hebrew]. Four had been bespoken by my colleagues in this city, and one I have reserved for yourself. Will you have the kindness to inform me what means you deem best to forward it? By mail, it will, of course, be attended with some expense. If you know any persons here, who, being in the habit of travelling to and fro, would take charge of it, and let you have it at his arrival in Chicago, name him and the place where he can be found, I will deliver it in his hands. The price of the work is five francs in gold a volume, which, together with the large number of post-age stamps accompanying each volume, will make it amount to six dollars.
You will oblige by apologizing for me to Dr. Bunreuther for not forwarding a copy, as yet, to his ad-dress. Probably, I shall receive more. If I knew positively that I could dispose of many, I would ask for them without hesitation, for to serve the family of an illustrious Jew, and the cause of Hebrew literature, I cheerfully would under-take what might ential some labor, but I would feel pained to cause my Italian correspondent disappointment, while I could not, in justice to my numerous family, risk to be a loser. I send another catalogue, and from that you will perceive that they have it in contemplation to publish some of Luzzato's works simply with a comment, omitting the Italian version, which can be of little use outside of Italy.
