Rev. Dr. B. Felsenthal,
My dear Colleague and Sir:
Eiscy Graber has taken upon himself to make me his agent. Greatly as I wish to promote the sale of any work emanating from the great Hebraist, whose memory I revere, I told the publisher several times to write directly to the persons who purchase the books, and induce them to forward him the price by postal orders. Still, he persisted in his old way. I believe that one dollar will pay for the Beth Ha-Otzar.
Anelanti in Italian means, "the longing ones". No doubt, those who belonged to the society called themselves [Hebrew] to emphasize their yearning after sacred knowledge [Hebrew] [Hebrew]
I read the article in the Menorah, to which you allude, and I felt much interested in it. I was reminded of the fact that the practive of pronouncing the quadriliteral word began with the Protestant Church. If I don't err, the Catholic--at least in Italy--avoid uttering it, just as Ortho-dox Jews do. Speaking of Orthodox, I will say, that Chief Rabbi Mortara wrote me a short time ago something similar to what you suggested in your last. My anxiety is to raise men whose knowledge, sense of humor, and enlightened piety will render them fit to teach the Jewish Community. I care nothing for names and for titles. I don't pretend to predect success. My intentions are good, and I shall try my utmost, disinterestedly, to carry them out. If I fail, I trust, it will not be through any voluntary sin on my part.
With kind greetings, assuring you that to re-ceive your letters afford me much pleasure, I remain
Yours very truly,
S. Morais
