My dear Sir,
Your kind favor of the 17th. Octr. reached me today & I hasten to reply thereto.
I now perceive the great omission in my last with respect to the description of the party sought after & altho' I now send you the same, I must admit to vagueness, & trust at the same time it may in some way aid you in the search.
Be pleased to understand that the present description may not of its own accuracy identify Mr Goldman, as he no doubt may have much altered in the course of eleven or Twelve years, but at the time he was last seen, he was according to the statement of my requisitionist (who is a foreigner) about 45 years of age—of middle stature, dark complexion, with an inclination to be stout—this is all I can give you.
It appears likely to me, if a person of the above description be met—he might be asked if he were at any time in Queensland—if found that he had been in Queensland his identity would then be established, for he was then & up till now the only person of that name in the Colony
It is also possible should he have died the Board of Health may have a record of the place whence he came—viz Queensland but the greatest probability appears to be that
if dead he was buried by [Hebrew] & they would surely record the fact in their books of the Synagogue
It is difficult for me to conjecture how the [Hebrew] are situated in your city but in these Colonies—there is not a single Jewish individual who is not known & recognized by some one—it is no matter where he might happen to come from—should it [?] be from India & China Figis or elsewhere--& judging from ourselves I am led to believe that a private inquiry among individuals especially (foreign [Hebrew]) would effect the purpose--& I am the more inclined to think so, from your statement-- "for many persons of the name of Goldman have lived & died in our city"--if it were possible to discover if one came from or had been in Queensland—the matter would be then settled.
I thank you for the h[?] teaching the law—as it would affect the marriage of the parties in question—but I find that the parties married (not before a magistrate) but a Registrar—which is about the same thing on the strength of the information received that Mr. G. was dead--& that prior to this marriage my
requisitionist gave Mrs. G. protection & shelter only from alleged cruelty of her husband Then if the information they had gotten was a fact, I would submit that the impedimt is removed & the law will not apply to them [Hebrew]
I have nothing further to add but to commit the care of this matter to your hand with the hope that your kind endeavours will lead to a successful issue
