Rev. Dr. S. Morais,
Dear Sir:
I can inform you now that Mr. Weintrub will get one machine. The difficulty lay in the fact that at the meeting on Sunday last a week ago of the Baron de Hirsch Committee it was decided to give preference in all cases of aid to families who had resided in this country not over six months. It required therefore special pleading, and the bringing up of your letter recommending the man to have the case acted upon in the above manner. But "all's well that ends well," and you will no doubt feel pleased with the result, while Mr. Weintrub's family will have some satisfaction at least of having tasted of the Baron de Hirsch's munificence.
You may also be pleased to hear that my mania for resignation has ceased at last, and that the President of the Board of Commissioners has
written me a personal letter expressing his hope that I will not resign. The fact is that somehow I felt myself in somebody's way, being aware that a dark enemy is seeking to injure me, and I was consequently ready to withdraw from the strife thought pride whispered a different course. Now dignity has come to my assistance, and the feeling of responsibility resting upon my house in view of the confidence reposed, and I began to feel quite differently.
