In the Rev. Mr. Morais' reply to Yours[?]--
he says there is no mention made in the Bible of Prayers for the dead, but that is found in the book of Maccabees, we do not believe that the Apochryphia is inspired[.] Consequently it is not part of our Bible nor is it bound up in it, however I got a Roman Catholic Bible and found what Mr. Morais eludes to[.] we con-sider that when the Lord takes our dear ones to himself, they no longer require our prayers, "as the tree falls so shalllie"-- we of course do not believe as the Romanists do that there is an intermediate state. Regarding the shedding of blood for the remission of sins, Mr. Marais says it never was a dogma in the Jewish Church, that the blood of Animals was intended as an atonement for sins. This astonishes me very much, for who can read the 16th & 17th Chapters of
Leviticus & not believe that these animals were offered as an atonement The 6th &16 verses of the 16th Ch[apter]. For instance, then the 11th ver. of the 17th Ch. says, for the life of the flesh is in the blood, & I have given it to you as your Altar to make an atonement for your souls. For it is the blood that makes an atonement for the soul, what can be more comprehensive The reason why you do not eat the blood in your meat: is, because it was used for an atonement for your souls, now, since you no longer use the blood as an atonement why not let the blood remain in the meat-- it seems to me if the one is given up, why not the other, the one was as strictlycommanded as the other.
The quotation from Hosea, I do not quite understand. "One may pay for Steers[?] by the utterance of our lips" Now his quotation from Hosea Ch. 1[overwritten:5]4
& 2nd Ver. reads thus "say unto the [?] take away all iniquity and receive us graciously so will we render the calves of our lips." & Scott. one of the best Commentators interperates the verse thus, Israel is here exhorted to return to the Lord & they might expect all blessings promised their Fathers-- "Then with their lips they would proclaim his praise, rendering him sacrifices of Thanksgiving, far more acceptable than the blood of the calves of the stall" Another question I would like to ask. When & How is the Messiah the Savior to come-- as is promised in The Old Testament. how about the 53rd ch. of Isaiah--
