To My Teacher
Rev. Sir
My object in writing to you is to deside the following question. There is a class of Polish Jews in the City of New York who claim they know more of our Hebrew than any nation on the face of the Earth. I come across them frequently and I find them very presuming. I have not yet forgotten the instructions I received from you. I mean in Theory--The practical part I have conquored since my manhood. The question which I am desirous for you to deside is this: A Pole who is a constant visitor in the [Hebrew] was aguing with me on the meaning of the word [Hebrew] the way
they pronounce the Hebrew is difficult for me to understand. I managed to make him understand that [Hebrew] was Salt_. he insisted it was not. I claimed that the letters he written was wrong, and I commenced to write the three letters in Hebrew which surprized him very much to see an Englishman write Hebrew. He will have that [Hebrew] means King. I showed him where his grand mistake was and again I written [Hebrew] means King [Hebrew] means Salt. I told him I never saw such a word written, and that, if he means [Hebrew] that word signifies "to Reign, No! No! he exclaimed [Hebrew] means King and is written and punctuated that way.
I thought it was useless of me to try to convince this man as he insisted that he was right, and I
was wrong therefore I leave the question for you to deside, and as in my mind there is no other decition but yours will I bow down to, so please answer the question
