My dear Sir
It is now nearly a month since I received your last letter and I feel as if I ought to not to delay answering any more. First, I am thankful for your praise of the Visitor, which since Jan. 1st has appeared entirely in a new form, twice its former size, with a great deal of good and useful reading matter in it. I have commenced the publication of a series of articles on "Moses Mendelssohn" and the plan is to have them published in book form as soon as completed. This will constitute the first of a series of Sabbath Visitor publications destined for the use of schools and young people. Do you not think that the presentation of M's life in a simple, but attractive English form will prove beneficial to our young people? I, at least, hope so, and besides, I shall feel quite fond to have my first book published. I do not mean to say that that is the height of my ambition but I wish to contribute my share towards

supplying a want among the American Israel, namely, that of informing them of the history of the fathers. I have of late been thinking of several matters, which, Heaven helping me, will take shape in book form. I am still pegging away at my "tales of Jewish family life" in Holland" but i have deferred their publication until my Mendelssohn series is finished. Then, for the last twelve months, I have been quietly collecting materials for a book, with which I hope to make my reputation, namely "a history of the Jews in America" from hist discovery until this day," but I can progress but very, very slowly. The material is scanty and what there is of it distributed over nearly every point of the compass. At some future day I will ask your kind assistance in furnishing me prints concerning the history of the Jews of Philadelphia, which have hitherto escaped my attention.
Yesterday I received the three vols of the [Hebrew] with a very kind Hebrew postal card

from Graeber I have the time neither to answer the one nor to read the other but I must steal me a few quiet evening hours very soon. For the last few days work has been impossible. It has been freezingly, intensely cold, and this is actual distress in this climate. My frame is no more used to northern vigor and I have suffered from the cold more than I ever expected I would, when for miles I was skating on my native ice. This letter bears evidence of my writing it with cramped hands, but I must proceed, as I have no time to idle away any more. If you permit, I will, after perusing the letters, try to popularize them by a review in the Israelite.
The matter discussed in our last letter remains in status quo. The lady members of the family are obdurate, and I care not to precipitate matters. This is one of the cases in which temporizing is a

virtue.
Have you heard of my Texas colleagues? If not please advise me, in which case I will write them.
I see from your last postal that you liked my pamphlet. I am glad of it, as I was rather anxious to know how it would be thought of in the north. Here around Jew and Gentile have approved of it, and even the members of the offender's congregation, the [?] in the city, have expressed themselves as on my side, though they deplore the occurrence. I would be obliged if you could find time to give me your opinion more elaborately.
No other news at present. I beg to be remembered to Miss Morais and the children and awaiting an early reply I remain
