- Epstein and the four other Jewish traders from Richmond, Va., were suspected barricade runners and their property, chiefly boxes of tobacco and money, was seized by an intercepting Union schooner in 1864. The group, labeled throughout the report as "foreign Jews," therefore presumed guilty, claimed to be fleeing the Confederacy and were seeking amnesty as refugees.
