- Epstein was captured, together with others, as they tried to enter Union lines on the schooner "Thomas F. Dawson," and all of their property was seized. Major General Benjamin T. Butler’s deposition refers to the group as "foreign Jews," "five Jews," or "these Jews." At head of title: 39th Congress, 1st Session. House of Representatives. Ex. Doc. No. 9.
